A Life Uncorked (c2005)

A Life Uncorked (c2005)

This new copy of Hugh Johnson's autobiography arrived 2 days ago and I'm now over 50 pages into it. Very well written and surprisingly unsnobbish, given the author's knowledge and who he has rubbed shoulders with.

I share Johnson's distrust and dislike of wine ratings either in a 50 to 100 number ranking or described in terms of particular nonwine flavors (e.g., mellon, tobacco, mineral, etc.), though my exploring is at the opposite end from his pricey complex wines drunk with fancy food. He is also perhaps out of fashion in leaning away from strong wines, toward subtler tastes, what might be called elegant, he says, which is therefore also quite different from Robert Parker's favored wines and influence. (This Lindemans 2006 Bin 50 Shiraz on the table is okay -- not bad and not great -- but nothing like what Hugh Johnson would care to try and probably as far as possible below what he has to choose from in his wine cellars.)

This tip I came across when browsing farther ahead (p. 276) could be immediately useful for tasting wines more accurately:

'Buy on an apple and sell on cheese,' is an old wine-trade axiom. An apple is a cold appraiser of a wine's constitution. No wine tastes its best with an apple, and bad wines taste miserable. Cheese is the opposite. It forms a forgiving fatty layer between you and the acidity; it plays off the tannins with protein. You miss the faults -- or pardon them. Cheese is the salesman's friend.

When a vintner prepares a small feast at a wine tasting I always feel suspicious, cheese or no cheese. ...

Part of my Final Major series titled 'Victims of Fashion'.

The set portrays fashion faux pas as the factor tipping these 'victims' over the edge towards suicide. Its meant to show in a satirical, tongue-in-cheek way how fashion is taken too seriously, and that anyone outside of the current trends is victimised and cast out.

The series was shot using a Hasselblad 503CM with Sunpak ring flash on Velvia 50. I then hand processed it and scanned it in with a Hasselblad scanner. I have then removed any dust/scratches and used levels and curves to accentuate the lovely saturation and colours of the Velvia 50 film.

The equipment used is also relevant to the subject matter. The camera and film are often seen in high end fashion, and the ring flash also, however it is also employed in forensic photography, which is a nod towards the style of the images captured.

Free Gift with Purchase: My Improbable Career in Magazines and Makeup

Everybody loves beauty products. Even if you think you know nothing about them, or even if you think you hate them, you actually know plenty about them and, in fact, have several of them that you love. You have major opinions that lie barely beneath the surface. Women whomodestly/moralistically claim to “never use all that beauty stuff” are big Clinique ladies, usually with a healthy helping of Neutrogena. —Free Gift with Purchase

From the beloved beauty editor of Lucky magazine comes a dishy, charming, and insightful memoir of an unlikely career. Combining the personal stories of a quirky tomboy who found herself in the inner circle of the beauty world with priceless makeup tips (Is there really a perfect red lipstick out there for everyone? Which miracle skin potion actually works?), Jean Godfrey-June takes us behind the scenes to a world of glamour, fashion, and celebrity.

Godfrey-June’s funny, smart, outsider perspective on beauty has set her apart since she first started writing her popular “Godfrey’s Guide” column for Elle magazine. In Free Gift with Purchase, she invites us into the absurd excess of the offices, closets, and medicine cabinets of beauty editors. From shelves upon shelves of face lotion, conditioner, lipstick, eye cream, wrinkle reducers, and perfume to thoroughly disturbing “acne breakfasts” and “cellulite lunches”; from the lows (a makeover from hell, getting pedicure tips from porn stars) to the highs (the glamour of the fashion shows in Paris, lounging in bed with Tom Ford, a flight on Donald Trump’s private jet, and landing her dream job at Lucky magazine), we see it all.

Like a friend sharing the details of her incredibly cool job, Jean lets us in on the lessons she’s learned along the way, about the eternal search for the right haircut and the perfect lip gloss, of course—but more important, about what her job has meant to her and why she loves what she does, blemishes and all.

So let me tell you about Mark, my friend, co-worker and supervisor.

Living close enough to work, he eschews buying a parking permit, choosing instead to walk. Normally this works out well, save for inclement weather.

One issue, though, is that shoes one walks in are not the best shoes to wear with dressy clothes. Having to deal with administration and committees means that Mark has to look nice (unlike slacker programmers like myself, who do not venture out of our holes). This leads to Mark keeping a pair of shiny dress shoes at the office and doing the "Mr. Rogers" thing when he arrives for work.

Well, we're moving offices, and found ourselves doing hard labor. Mark found that though the jeans and t-shirt he wore were adequate for work, the sandals that he came to work in were not. Thus, there was only one option.

So here it is, the new fashion craze. Rolled up jeans with shiny black dress shoes. When all the cool kids are doing it, you'll know where you saw it first.

Marlene Dietrich: The Glamour Collection (Morocco/ Blonde Venus/ The Devil Is a Woman/ Flame of New Orleans/ Golden Earrings)

Undeniably one of the most beautiful and dazzling actresses to ever grace the silver screen, Marlene Dietrich was renowned for her sultry voice and her alluring "bedroom eyes." This unprecedented 5-movie collection pays homage to the legendary Oscar®-nominated leading lady whose extraordinary talents revolutionized cinema and inspired passion in audiences around the globe. See Marlene in her American movie debut as a glamorous cabaret singer in Morocco; experience the heart-wrenching anguish of a woman torn between two men, her successful career on stage and her child in Blonde Venus; join in the mystery and mayhem of Spain’s Carnevale in The Devil Is a Woman; hit the road to jewels and jeopardy in The Flame of New Orleans; and be seduced by a lusty gypsy on a secret mission during World War II in Golden Earrings. It’s a stunning tribute to a screen siren who remains one of the most fascinating women of all time.

Marlene Dietrich was one of the cinema's glorious creatures, an elegant arrangement of bone structure and silver light, blessed with a sly sense of humor. Marlene Dietrich: The Glamour Collection assembles five titles featuring la Dietrich at her best, with a special emphasis on one of the great Hollywood director-star collaborations.
Dietrich and director Josef von Sternberg met in Germany when he plucked her from obscurity for the starring role of The Blue Angel, after which she came to America and instant stardom. A string of films with Sternberg created her image as an exotic source of fascination, both ethereal and sexually knowing. Three of those outings are included in this package. Morocco, their first Hollywood movie together, is a delirious look at a cabaret singer taken with a Foreign Legion soldier (the young Gary Cooper). Dressed in masculine clothes for her act, Dietrich already displays a sexual confidence that fairly burns off the screen. Blonde Venus has a soap opera-ish plot about a woman's fall and rise, but Dietrich's commitment to the part is complete; plus, there's an outrageous faux-African number that begins with Dietrich dressed in a gorilla costume. Cary Grant looks on in astonishment.
The Devil Is a Woman is an unmitigated Sternberg-Dietrich masterpiece, and their final movie together. Here Marlene is a Spanish vixen making life exciting and miserable for Lionel Atwill (a lookalike stand-in for Josef von Sternberg himself). The film is an eye-popping light-painting draped with feathers, mesh, and confetti, all of which are in service to a fundamentally serious inquiry into the knotty business of men and women.
Putting three of the Paramount Dietrich-Sternberg films in this collection and leaving out the other three is either carelessness or marketing strategy. In any case, the other two movies in this package are not at the same level, but certainly good fun. The Flame of New Orleans, director Rene Clair's first Hollywood picture, is a gorgeously photographed comedy with a delightful role for its star. Dietrich is stuck choosing between aristocrat Roland Young and rough sailor Bruce Cabot. The look on her face as she listens to helpful advice about wedding-night conjugal realities from a matron is a riot of erotic mischief. Golden Earrings is a crazy story about Ray Milland getting stuck behind German lines in the early days of WWII, and being taken in by gypsy girl Dietrich. Even here, nearly 20 years after her first stardom, she's still Dietrich. The hair may be dyed black, but the cheekbones are unmistakable. --Robert Horton

Norman Parkinson: Portraits in Fashion

The unrivaled portfolio of one of the 20th century's great fashion photographers is examined in this survey featuring dazzling original prints from Parkinson's own archive

From his first outdoor fashion shoot in 1935, Norman Parkinson's "moving pictures taken with a still camera" brought glamour and inventiveness to fashion photography. He set the New Look against the New York skyline, Quant dresses in swinging London, and Calvin Klein and Krizia in exotic locations from Tahiti to Tobago. "If a girl looks like a model, she is not for my lens," said Parks. He wanted energy and individuality, and found it in women like Wenda, the willowy actress he married in 1947, Celia Hammond, Jerry Hall, Iman, and Appollonia van Ravenstein. Parkinson's long association with Vogue and his numerous assignments for Harper's Bazaar, Queen, and other international magazines brought him fame and recognition—in return he gave the fashion world ineffable style and unforgettable images.

Barbie Millicent Roberts: An Original

A Barbie Spectacular on the eve of her fortieth birthday.

The early and rare Barbie--in 75 ravishing photographs. Barbie as she was meant to be seen and celebrated, clothed in Mattel's now rare ensembles inspired by the original designs of the great couturiers--Chanel, Givenchy, Dior, Balenciaga--and brilliantly photographed by David Levinthal, the foremost toy photographer at work today.

The incomparable Barbie--Barbie Millicent Roberts--was born in 1959 in the heyday of haute couture. But Barbie has always been at the center of style. No woman alive has kept up with the latest fashion of the day as Barbie has, with the perfect ensemble for every occasion: a night at the ballet, her first date, a festive barbecue, an afternoon at the beach, a day at the office, a Saturday matinee, her wedding day. And each has been perfectly accessorized: shoes, pocketbooks, long gloves, a fur stole, sunglasses, a beach bag, a single strand of pearls.

No other book about Barbie shows her as she is seen here, in breathtaking image after image--her hair, her accessories, her clothes, styled to perfection. The essential Barbie, as she was meant to look to the millions who have seen in her the embodiment of their dream of beauty and glamour, has been brilliantly captured by David Levinthal, whose photographs have been exhibited and admired around the world.

With a preface by Valerie Steele.
