A Life Uncorked (c2005)

A Life Uncorked (c2005)

This new copy of Hugh Johnson's autobiography arrived 2 days ago and I'm now over 50 pages into it. Very well written and surprisingly unsnobbish, given the author's knowledge and who he has rubbed shoulders with.

I share Johnson's distrust and dislike of wine ratings either in a 50 to 100 number ranking or described in terms of particular nonwine flavors (e.g., mellon, tobacco, mineral, etc.), though my exploring is at the opposite end from his pricey complex wines drunk with fancy food. He is also perhaps out of fashion in leaning away from strong wines, toward subtler tastes, what might be called elegant, he says, which is therefore also quite different from Robert Parker's favored wines and influence. (This Lindemans 2006 Bin 50 Shiraz on the table is okay -- not bad and not great -- but nothing like what Hugh Johnson would care to try and probably as far as possible below what he has to choose from in his wine cellars.)

This tip I came across when browsing farther ahead (p. 276) could be immediately useful for tasting wines more accurately:

'Buy on an apple and sell on cheese,' is an old wine-trade axiom. An apple is a cold appraiser of a wine's constitution. No wine tastes its best with an apple, and bad wines taste miserable. Cheese is the opposite. It forms a forgiving fatty layer between you and the acidity; it plays off the tannins with protein. You miss the faults -- or pardon them. Cheese is the salesman's friend.

When a vintner prepares a small feast at a wine tasting I always feel suspicious, cheese or no cheese. ...

Part of my Final Major series titled 'Victims of Fashion'.

The set portrays fashion faux pas as the factor tipping these 'victims' over the edge towards suicide. Its meant to show in a satirical, tongue-in-cheek way how fashion is taken too seriously, and that anyone outside of the current trends is victimised and cast out.

The series was shot using a Hasselblad 503CM with Sunpak ring flash on Velvia 50. I then hand processed it and scanned it in with a Hasselblad scanner. I have then removed any dust/scratches and used levels and curves to accentuate the lovely saturation and colours of the Velvia 50 film.

The equipment used is also relevant to the subject matter. The camera and film are often seen in high end fashion, and the ring flash also, however it is also employed in forensic photography, which is a nod towards the style of the images captured.

Marlene Dietrich: The Glamour Collection (Morocco/ Blonde Venus/ The Devil Is a Woman/ Flame of New Orleans/ Golden Earrings)

Undeniably one of the most beautiful and dazzling actresses to ever grace the silver screen, Marlene Dietrich was renowned for her sultry voice and her alluring "bedroom eyes." This unprecedented 5-movie collection pays homage to the legendary Oscar®-nominated leading lady whose extraordinary talents revolutionized cinema and inspired passion in audiences around the globe. See Marlene in her American movie debut as a glamorous cabaret singer in Morocco; experience the heart-wrenching anguish of a woman torn between two men, her successful career on stage and her child in Blonde Venus; join in the mystery and mayhem of Spain’s Carnevale in The Devil Is a Woman; hit the road to jewels and jeopardy in The Flame of New Orleans; and be seduced by a lusty gypsy on a secret mission during World War II in Golden Earrings. It’s a stunning tribute to a screen siren who remains one of the most fascinating women of all time.

Marlene Dietrich was one of the cinema's glorious creatures, an elegant arrangement of bone structure and silver light, blessed with a sly sense of humor. Marlene Dietrich: The Glamour Collection assembles five titles featuring la Dietrich at her best, with a special emphasis on one of the great Hollywood director-star collaborations.
Dietrich and director Josef von Sternberg met in Germany when he plucked her from obscurity for the starring role of The Blue Angel, after which she came to America and instant stardom. A string of films with Sternberg created her image as an exotic source of fascination, both ethereal and sexually knowing. Three of those outings are included in this package. Morocco, their first Hollywood movie together, is a delirious look at a cabaret singer taken with a Foreign Legion soldier (the young Gary Cooper). Dressed in masculine clothes for her act, Dietrich already displays a sexual confidence that fairly burns off the screen. Blonde Venus has a soap opera-ish plot about a woman's fall and rise, but Dietrich's commitment to the part is complete; plus, there's an outrageous faux-African number that begins with Dietrich dressed in a gorilla costume. Cary Grant looks on in astonishment.
The Devil Is a Woman is an unmitigated Sternberg-Dietrich masterpiece, and their final movie together. Here Marlene is a Spanish vixen making life exciting and miserable for Lionel Atwill (a lookalike stand-in for Josef von Sternberg himself). The film is an eye-popping light-painting draped with feathers, mesh, and confetti, all of which are in service to a fundamentally serious inquiry into the knotty business of men and women.
Putting three of the Paramount Dietrich-Sternberg films in this collection and leaving out the other three is either carelessness or marketing strategy. In any case, the other two movies in this package are not at the same level, but certainly good fun. The Flame of New Orleans, director Rene Clair's first Hollywood picture, is a gorgeously photographed comedy with a delightful role for its star. Dietrich is stuck choosing between aristocrat Roland Young and rough sailor Bruce Cabot. The look on her face as she listens to helpful advice about wedding-night conjugal realities from a matron is a riot of erotic mischief. Golden Earrings is a crazy story about Ray Milland getting stuck behind German lines in the early days of WWII, and being taken in by gypsy girl Dietrich. Even here, nearly 20 years after her first stardom, she's still Dietrich. The hair may be dyed black, but the cheekbones are unmistakable. --Robert Horton

Does Anyone Really Know Johnnie?

Does Anyone Really Know Johnnie?

The woman behind the glasses? Do you know her? Do you think you know her? Does it matter if you can prove who she is? In the fashion world you really don't know anyone. We are what we make ourselves to be within our work. We are consumed in what we create. The real fashion belongs to the those who are like Johnnie. To have greatness in your dream and your creations you have to have the courage to understand your client's wants. You have to walk in their world, on their turf, in their timeframe. This is what will separate those 'born of the street' from the corporate fashion houses run by Wall Street types. We wouldn't trust them with our banks why on Earth would we trust them with our fashion. To all those who love fashion, have the courage to design what you want to. Make sure to involve your "end client" by simply understanding their lifestyle. Don't be afraid to be different. Its liberating once you have a belief in yourself and your abilities. Last of all, don't do it for the wealth, that will come if you build your company the right way. Do it for your name, your family name and for pride in your work because really, you are the future of fashion. Take a look at the clothing brand Jack Wills who is secretive and spends no money on old economy advertising. Profit of ?17.4 million on sales of ?92 million pound sterling. Again no main stream advertising, not one penny. The reason they are successful? They created a tribe of loyal teenagers. They are a secretive company who connects via social networks with a niche market. They tapped into the allure of the British Privileged as a selling point. 44 stores in the UK, all are profitable and packed after school and on weekends. If you are a young designer take a look at this brand and see how their strategy can work for you. Most likely you have never heard of them or their founder Peter Williams.

Many years later I know understand why I was Johnnie. It worked for me. I loved to be secretive as to the ownership of the company. It set me free from my role as Christina Saint Marche and allowed me to get into a "tribe." Creativity is a cornerstone to any business. Be Bold! Be Creative!
Take calculated risks! Most of all, have fun. Never allow anyone to challenge your Dreams.

Oh hey Flicksters,
I'm back from Mexico! It was an amazing trip and I captured some pretty neat shots. From now on all my pictures will feel like SUMMER. I might not describe some (cause i'm super lazy), but some of them I will. I have over 250 pictures to edit. They all won't be on here, but in my scrapbook! My boyfriends sister bought me a really nice scrapbook for Christmas. She told me to fill it up with memories of the trip! I'm so excited to get started on it.

This picture was taken in a little resturant. I honestly have never had so many pina colatas in my entire life. My dad bought me those Ray Bans. They're my new favorite possesion.

I'm going to try and keep editing,
Talk to you later guys

Chantel

The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge

The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge

One of the most talented and influential couturiers of his time, Yves Saint Laurent began his career as Christian Dior’s protege and went on to become a legendary arbiter of twentieth-century style. Saint Laurent’s extraordinary taste went well beyond the world of fashion, and in this lavish volume, the eight splendid homes he shared with friend and lifelong business partner Pierre Berge are presented in immaculate detail. Notoriously shy, the designer and Berge lived in luxury, surrounded by incomparable collections of furniture and art. From the serene interiors of their apartment on the Rue Babylone to the incandescent beauty of the Villa Majorelle in Marrakech, Berge and Saint Laurent’s sensibilities come alive. Taken after Saint Laurent’s death in 2008, Ivan Terestchenko’s photographs capture these exquisite surroundings in full, showcasing nineteenth-century French decor, important paintings by modern and Romantic artists, and masterpieces of furniture, sculpture, and silver ranging from the Renaissance to the Art Deco era. Though the homes presented here are now empty, The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge is a testament to a rare union of passion, elegance, and supreme connoisseurship.

“The quintessence of very grand and highly personal French taste.” --Le Figaro

“As he did with fashion, Yves seized at one moment in time, a taste that was in the air, only to show his mastery. During the 1970s exoticism and Marrakech were currents in the air and St. Laurent became the authority. He was interested in Art Deco before it became fashionable, even before Andy Warhol and Karl Lagerfeld . . . St Laurent’s and Berge’s taste is an expression of a culture and is always a story. When they decorated a house it was no longer an ordinary house: it became a story to tell.”--Jacques Grange

“Takes readers . . . inside all eight of the couple's spectacular homes, from Paris to Marrakech.”--Elle Decor

“Terestchenko’s photographs beautifully capture the opulence and eclecticism of their dwellings.”--Clear

“In this lavish volume, the eight splendid homes . . . are presented in immaculate detail.”--California Home + Design

For the Storytellers group: I almost called this one "Market Research." I did it as a T-shirt designer by going to the mall once a week and seeing what was on the shelfs at hottopic, pacsun, hollister, zummies and on and on. As old and boring as walking the malls got it really made an impression on me. I learned that its not cheating to see what other creative types are doing and how they are doing it.... and how people respond to it. Inspiration is exposure to new and interesting things right? Well, for photography I do my market research late at night with a W magazine or Glamour or Bazaar.. any of the many womens fashion magazines I have subscriptions too. Me, a beer, a sharpie and my womens mags.... truth be told, its a showcase of the best fashion photographers in the world and I learn a lot by circling catch lights on the pages to see where a light came from, or outlining a good pose to show a model. So what this has to do with this image I've posted... I noticed that the torn page of a magazine can counter act a harsh line of a photo to make it all balance out. Hope you like it.
